Your address and domains

Your website comes with a free address you can rename. To use your own domain, buy it anywhere and connect it here.

Every site gets a free address you can rename under Website, Web address. After a rename, links to the old address, including printed ones, go to the new one for a year, and no other business can take it in that time. You can switch back to it until then. Pages and posts you rename keep their old links too. To use your own domain, buy it from any registrar, add it under Website, Web address, Your own domain, and follow the DNS steps shown; supported providers can connect in one step. Allpage doesn’t sell or renew domains. Once your domain connects, your emails to customers can come from it too (see "Send email from your own domain").

We check each connected domain every hour. If a check fails, your domain keeps showing your website and Web address shows a warning. If it keeps failing for a day, we tell you, and visitors go to your free address until a check passes again. With more than one domain, pick your main address: the others send visitors to it.

The last business to add its ownership record (the _allpage TXT record) gets the domain. If someone else proves it after you, we tell you and the domain stops showing your website. To take it back, remove their _allpage TXT record at your domain provider, then press Check now. Keep your own _allpage TXT record in place after your domain connects. If you remove it, another business whose old record is still in your DNS can take the domain.

For agents

domains.add saves a claim; it registers nothing until domains.check finds its TXT value at _allpage.<hostname>. The latest proof wins: the business that held the domain loses it and gets a domains.lost notice, and it can prove again only after the winner’s TXT value is gone. domains.check also returns serving: live, degraded (one or more failed checks, still served), offline (3 failed checks over at least 24 hours, owners told by domains.offline) or pending. domains.setPrimary makes a served domain the main address; the site’s other served domains redirect to it. domains.remove disconnects a domain. Tell the owner to keep their _allpage TXT record after the domain verifies: once it’s gone, any other claim whose TXT value is still in DNS can take the domain. business.rename { handle } changes the free address (<handle>.allpage.site); it’s tier 2, so it waits for the owner’s OK, and the old address redirects to the new one for 12 months.
