Set up sales tax

Each product gets a tax category for you; add the states where you’re registered and every card payment adds sales tax on top. This isn’t tax advice.

Each product has a tax category (physical goods, services, digital products or not taxable), set for you by what it is. Change it under Sales tax when you edit a product.

Selling physical products adds a Set up sales tax step to your setup. Open Money, Sales tax, type a state and press Add. You can add states before payments are on; checkout adds the tax once they are.

Once you’ve added a state, every card payment adds sales tax on top, worked out by Stripe on your own account: checkout, bookings, deposits, payment plans, balances, orders you approve, invoices and renewals. Anything you provide at your place (classes, appointments, pickups) is taxed at your address, so customers aren’t asked anything. For something you ship or send digitally, customers enter their ZIP code. Either way they see the sales tax as its own line and the total with it before they pay. Gift cards and store credit pay the tax on what they cover too. Turn on sales tax in Stripe under Money, Sales tax first. Until then, or if Stripe can’t work out tax for a customer, the charge still goes out without tax, and Money tells you under Needs you.

Refunds give the tax back too: refunding one person’s place or a called-off session gives back that part’s tax, and Stripe’s tax reports count it.

With no state added, nothing adds sales tax, and checkout says “No sales tax.”

Your tax settings and registrations with Stripe are under Money, Sales tax, once payments are on, without leaving Allpage. The tax you collected each month is on Money, Books, and your tax forms are on Money, Payouts, under Statements.

Where you have to collect depends on your state’s rules and where you sell. Confirm with your state’s tax agency. This isn’t tax advice.

For agents

Set the states with commerce.setTaxRegions. With any state set, a sale supplied at the business is taxed at its address (pass locationId for a venue); a sale with something shipped or sent digitally needs the customer’s ZIP code: pass taxZip to commerce.previewSale (it answers askZip without one, and words.tax with the total and due now with tax once it has one), commerce.checkout, commerce.acceptOffer, commerce.sell, offerings.review, offerings.enroll and offerings.book; without it they refuse on taxZip, unless the customer gave one on an earlier sale. Each payment’s tax comes from a Stripe Tax calculation on the business’s account when it’s charged; renewals use Stripe Tax on their invoice (automatic_tax). The charge keeps the tax as taxMinor, and taxNote says why when it went out untaxed. Paid payments are recorded with Stripe for tax reporting and refunds reverse their share, after the change commits. commerce.revenue reports tax collected per month. commerce.salesTax answers the states, whether checkout charges yet (charging) and the disclaimer. Stripe’s tax settings and registrations are embedded components the owner opens on Money, Sales tax; there’s no operation for them. Never tell the owner where they must collect; give the disclaimer.
